Local Volunteers in Medicine Clinic To Receive New Medical Facility

Cook Medical buys, rehabs building near Bloomington Hospital for non-profit medical services organization’s use

Bloomington, Ind. – Patients and volunteer staff at Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of Monroe County (VIM) will have a newly refurbished medical facility which will better enable the local organization to provide primary and preventive medical services to the uninsured and economically disadvantaged in Monroe and Owen Counties. The facility, which is an existing medical office at 811 W. Second St. near Bloomington Hospital, was purchased and refitted for VIM’s needs by Cook Medical and will be ready for occupancy January 1. VIM will lease the building from Cook for $1 a year, Cook officials said.

“We could not have opened as soon as we did, nor could we have provided anywhere near the level of medical service to the community without the generous support of the Cook organization,” said Elizabeth Sturgeon, executive director of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of Monroe County. “Not only has Cook supported us financially with an operating grant last year and now with this wonderful new facility, some Cook employees including physicians and nurses have given their own time to see VIM patients. It’s great for us to have a partnership with such a supportive member of the Bloomington and surrounding communities.”

VIM’s local chapter opened last year and in the first year of its existence the clinic has provided medical services to more than 4,000 area patients. Nearly 20,000 patient visits have been recorded, and the facility has dispensed more than 30,000 prescriptions. Staffed by local lay and medical professional volunteers, VIM has provided medical services amounting to $576,378 during the 12-month period from Oct. 1, 2007 to Sept. 31, 2008.

“As a medical company and a supporter of all the communities where Cook does business, we believe passionately in doing what’s best for patients and what’s crucial to the continuing growth and success of our hometowns,” said Kem Hawkins, president, Cook Medical. “By investing in the future of VIM as a vital part of Bloomington and the surrounding area, we hope to encourage more companies and individuals to come forward to support Volunteers In Medicine’s work and ensure its long-term stability."
